The Jack Rabbit Program will be starting next Saturday. We have made some changes to the times to better suit leader availability. Bunnies and Level One will run from 11:00 - 12:00 and Level Two - Track Attack will run from 12:00 - 1:30. We ask that parents have skiers at the chalet 10 minutes before start time and have them on the snow ready to go 5 minutes prior to start time.
The Zone 4 registration system is now up and running and all registration will be done online. Follow the steps in Natalie's previous email to help guide you through registration. If you should have any questions Natalie or myself are just a phone call away.
There will be a pickup session next Friday night for Jack Rabbits to come by the chalet between 7-9pm to pick up their Jack Rabbit kit, kits will not be distributed during the Jack Rabbit sessions. In order to pick up your kit, Jack Rabbits must be registered through the Zone 4 registration system. We will also be available to entertain any questions that you may have about the  JR program, Canteen or sizing of ski gear, etc.
Any parent planning to rent ski gear for their child this year should make a point on Friday Night to speak to Myself, George or Natalie, with regards to sizing of gear and availability.
As well, Bernice will be at the lodge on Friday night between 7-9 pm for all members registered on Zone 4 to pick up their passes.
The canteen will be active again this year and will be a success with everyone doing a little part. There will be a signup sheet for volunteers for the canteen, available at the chalet on Friday night as well. (Speak to our canteen coordinator, Catherine Pilgrim)
Looking forward to another fun-filled season of skiing!
Any questions feel free to email,

Hi Folks,

Well we got a dump of snow and it was just what we needed to get our 2.5 km trail groomed. While things are not great the trail is in good shape overall.

So if you have registered, get on your skis and get out for a run around the 2.5. You will notice that we have started to groom the 5.0 kilometer loop, but it is not ready yet for use.

Hopefully we will have a fire in the Chalet on Friday night, have the trail lights on and some coffee brewing. By the way we have extended our lights to 9:30 this year. So now you can ski from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm Monday to Friday.

Drop out for a look around and feel free to pass this message on to anyone you know that may be interested in dropping y the club to see what we are all about.

Over the next few days I will be passing on additional information with regard to some changes for this year concerning rentals, new registration fees and some plans for the coming year. As well Natalie and Michelle will be bringing you up to speed on Jackrabbits in the coming days.

Happy Trails

Trail lights will be on from 6:30 to 9:30 pm each night Monday to Friday. The trails will not be lit on Saturdays or Sundays.

Please note that our lights are controlled by a timer so they will go off promptly at 9:30pm.

1) For those that want to register in person there will be a Registration Session at the Ski Chalet this coming Friday night, January  from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The first Jack Rabbit session is scheduled to begin on Saturday January at ??. All kids need to be registered  prior to attending the first Jack rabbit session.

There will be pertinent information passed on during registration regarding canteen requirements, Jack Rabbit sessions, levels, etc and it can be an opportunity for parents to ask any questions regarding the Jack Rabbit program.

2)      You also have the option of registering on line using Zone 4. Please see link below!

3)      It is particularly important for parents of Jackrabbits to attend the session on Friday night. Even if you register on line, info on groups, levels and schedules for the coming year will be available.

4)      Our rates have increased slightly for this year. This is primarily due to increased insurance premiums and membership dues payable to our parent organization Cross Country Canada. Our rates are still the best in the province for a club that offers the services, instruction and trails that we do.

Aurora Nordic Jack Rabbit program is in need of additional volunteers to help with the program. From helping with ski rentals on Jack Rabbit day to assisting Bunnies (smaller children) on the trail, volunteering in the canteen, to  providing instruction to higher levels of  Jack Rabbits, any help will greatly be appreciated. If you or someone you know would like to give some time, contact Michelle or Natalie Hughes via email.

With respect to trail grooming: Things are a work in progress. We should have the 5km loop up and running by this coming weekend. There is a problem with the lights on the 2.5 which will hopefully be corrected as soon as possible. Once that is done the 2.5 will be open for skiing and an e-mail advising such will be sent out.

*******Parents who intend on registering their kids for Jack Rabbits must do so prior to thie first session. Kids not registered will not be able to partake in the session. Jack Rabbit parents who intend on renting ski gear should make a point to arrive at least a half hour prior to the Jack Rabbit session, as smaller ski gear is limited.  We also encourage parents to look for and consider buying some second hand gear for their kids if they have the opportunity.

To register online (from the convenience of your home) please see below:

You can copy and paste the following link into your address bar to bring you to the registration page and follow the steps:

If that fails you can always google - 'Zone 4' > click the 'Registrations' tab > search 'aurora' > click on 'Aurora Nordic Ski Club 2014/15 Registration > follow the steps to guide you through the registration.
Please note:
You can only select the 2nd spouse skier rate if you have the 1st spouse skier selected as well.
you can only choose the 2nd spouse snowshoe rate if you have 1st spouse snowshoer selected as well.

1st skier CANNOT be combined with 2nd snowshoer.

You will also receive a laminated trail pass as in other years and Bernice Smith will distribute them. (Don't worry she will track you down and make sure you get your pass.)
If you have any questions, please contact Natalie via email or telephone (454-8356).

If you or someone you know is interested in helping out with the Jack Rabbit program, we could always use an extra set of hands. We are asking individuals who have made the committment to help out this year to please ensure that you are registered prior to the first JR session!

Parents of Jackrabbits are strongly encouraged to have their children registered during one of the Scheduled Registered times or to use the online registration system. In any case if you register your child on line you will still need to see Michelle Tucker or Natalie Hughes prior to your child going on the snow. You should give yourself ample time to see one of them to find out your child’s group and ask any questions you may have.

Due to insurance reasons children not registered will not be permitted to participate in the first Jackrabbit session.

If you have any ski gear for sale or if you want any ski items please forward your information to Lorne Coombs at and he will post it on our website under the bulletin board.

A guide to help with ski gear sizing can be found at the link

Good morning everyone,
Some time ago I sent you an e-mail advising that we had some questions with regard to skiers/snowshoers taking their dogs on our trails. There were requests to provide more time than the two hours that we were allotting from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Saturday afternoons.
We had a letter from a non-member and an e-mail from a member asking us to consider and clarify our policy on this matter and allow more opportunity for people to take their dogs on our trails. At that time I advised that we were seeking advice and guidance from both Cross Country Canada ( CCC ) and Cross Country Newfoundland and Labrador ( CCNL ) and looking toward what is done at other clubs.
Over the past few weeks we have dialogued with all other ski clubs in Newfoundland and Labrador. All of these clubs are consistent in that they do not allow dogs on their trails at any times. As well, while not a member of Cross Country Newfoundland and Labrador, Gros Morne National Park does not allow dogs to use cross country trails near the visitor center in the park.
As well we have checked with our colleagues at CCC, our parent organization who provide us with advice, program administration and insurance coverage. They advised us that other clubs raised the same issue, and the opinion of the insurer is that dogs and cross country skiers and snowshoers often do not mix. However, if a club permits dogs then they must warn users, establish some rules and guidelines and provide signage to that effect.
Considering all of the above, the executive has decided that our present policy of allowing dogs access to our trails from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturdays will remain in effect.
In the coming days a sign will be posted at the entrance to our trails advising of this rule.

Dogs on Trails

1) We have made a decision with regard to people bringing their dogs to the trails. We have had a high number of concerns brought to us with respect to dogs on the trail. There are many more dogs being brought to the club then in the past. Members have cited concerns with dogs in their way while skiing, a mess left on trail and people with fears of dogs. Added to this is the possible liability for the club, and in particular the executive, should a dog cause or inflict an injury on a person.
We have decided that other than from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Saturdays, dogs will not be permitted on club trails or property. We realize that this move will disappoint some people, but we are acting in the best interest of all. If you bring your dog at the designated time, please clean up after it.
2) Registration is going very well. If you want to register or know someone that is, ask them to touch base with Neil Colbourne.
3) Our trials are in very good shape considering the amount of snow we have. The ten is groomed and the track for classic skiing is being set.  Really though it is no surprise given that we have a great groomer operator and he deserves a lot of credit! Great job Dean!!!!!
4) We will be offering adult lessons at a later date to be announced.
5) We will be having several  waxing clinics to be announced at a later date as well. This will be a demonstration only. People can bring there own wax/equipment and then do their own skis with some guidance after the lesson. In addition to this the door to our waxing room will be open throughout the week days for those who want to use the room to do their skis. All we ask is that you clean up after yourself and make sure things are unplugged when you leave
6) Lights will come on at 6:30. Please note that they will go out at 9:00 sharp so give yourself time to be back at the Chalet before 9:00pm
